It was founded on the top of an ancient Arab Palace that King Juan I donated to the Dominican friars in 1382. It was the headquarters of the University of Santa Catalina Martir in the 16^th century. In the 19^thcentury, it became a poorhouse. The cloistered courtyard is a great example of the baroque art in the city. Nowadays, the building houses the provincial historical archive.
